Post Surgery Scar Repair

The problem

Our client came to visit us in 2007 because she was unhappy with the texture, colour and overall appearance of her skin. She was in her mid-seventies, and her initial concerns were sunspots and other surface pigmentation, dryness in her facial skin and overall signs of aging. In addition to this, part way through the treatment process a Basil Cell Carcinoma was discovered on her left cheek which had to be removed resulting in a deep scar across her left cheek. The tightness and diameter of the scar resulted in a sunken puckering affect that was then added to her list of concerns.

This client was on medication for back pain, had allergies to pollen and wheat, is an asthmatic and has low bone density. She had breast cancer 5 years previously but was currently in remission. Despite her health issues however, her work/play lifestyle was good. She was on a balanced diet, although her allergies to wheat limited her intake of cereals and bread. She was active physically, undertaking regular walks and quilting was “more than” a hobby.

The Solution Process

We began our client on a basic homecare routine, beginning with growth factor serums and low dose vitamin A to normalise skin cells.
The client also committed to regular four weekly treatment facials using our facial infusion machine to optimize the action of these specialised products and enhance her homecare routine.

We gradually increased the homecare range to include a mild cleansing cream, toner to hydrate and sloth away excess skin cells, an SPF16+ for sun protection and increased the Vitamin A levels to continue to normalise the skin.

We continued this regime until November 2008, when we noticed a change in one of the sunspots on the left side of her face and advised the client to have it checked. It was identified as a Basil Cell and needed to be removed.

The resulting scar from the surgery created skin puckering causing the side of the face to be uneven. This then became the client’s main concern.

We immediately began applying a scar repairing product containing centella asiatica which utilises wound healing ingredients, and added a mild form of vitamin A (also found naturally in skin cells). Our Client applied this twice daily until the stitches were removed.
The client then resumed her infusion treatments in salon, utilising the growth factor serum with the scar repairing serum as homecare. We did these on a two weekly basis for four treatments. During this time she continued with her prescribed homecare with the inclusion of the scar repair product. We then continued with monthly maintenance treatments.

After the first monthly maintenance, Vitamin C was introduced into her homecare to improve the collagen levels in her skin. The low dose Vitamin A creams were also increased gradually. The effect of these increased doses was to normalise the production of the skin in the tissue surrounding the scar as well as the rest of her face.

Utilising her homecare and continuing with her regular treatment facials we have greatly improved the appearance and texture of the scar (shown in before and after pictures).

Case Study Two

Adult Hormonal Acne

The Problem
Our next case study initially became a client in 2002. Her concerns at this stage were constant congestion with inflamed breakouts constantly but more severe at certain times of each month. These occurred mainly along the jawline and spread down the neck. The texture of her skin was dull and uneven, and the colour was sallow. Her skin was also extremely dehydrated due to her lifestyle as a busy career woman plus a regular smoker and social drinker.

Our client was 36 years old with a history of miscarriages and an ectopic pregnancy resulting in the loss of an ovary. During the course of her treatments she became pregnant again with the first pregnancy ceasing at 3 months and the second resulting in a premature baby which was in the hospital neonatal unit until nearly six months old.

During this time our client was highly stressed, exhausted by her daily hospital visits, and of course concerned for the welfare of the baby. Her diet was poor, her smoking increased and her general health decreased. Her skin concerns also changed to include hormonal pigmentation darkened by pregnancies and increased breakouts.

Solution Process
Initially the treatment was aimed at containing the pre-monthly breakouts, with fortnightly specialised facials.
We therefore assessed what stage she was in during her monthly cycle and treated in the week prior. This treatment included using products which liquefy sebum and contain antibacterial properties to act as an anti-inflammatory on the skin. We also removed surface debris and utilized Alpha-Hydroxy-Acids and mild Glycolic Acids to gently exfoliate and hydrate the skin.
In the alternate fortnight of this monthly treatment programme, we utilised our facial infusion machine to optimize the action of vitamins and immune booster serums by enhancing the penetration of these products into the skin.

These treatments were extremely successful in keeping our client’s skin clear and blemish free – hampered only by the recurrent pregnancies.
We would therefore carefully monitor our client’s skin within her scheduled appointments and amend our treatments accordingly.
Following the birth of the baby we included Vitamin C and pigment inhibiting serums into both our regular facial treatments and homecare regime. The vitamin C also assisted in combating the free-radical damage caused by smoking.

Added to her homecare routine was a gentle cleanser and toner specifically formulated to decongest the skin without stripping or drying it out. This was followed by growth factor serums and vitamin serums along with a chemical free sunscreen.
